Plant Information

  • Plant Type: Evergreen Tree
  • Scientific Name: Pseudotsuga menziesii Play audio of plant name
  • Family: Douglasfir
  • Zone: 4
  • Plant Size: 40-50'
  • Habit: Pyramidal
  • Culture:

Requires a soil with adequate moisture. Full sun to partial shade. Performs badly on open windy sites.

  • Notes:

An exceptional tree when sited properly. Grows to magnificent size (300'+) in its native Pacific Northwest. Is significantly more modest in the Midwest though still beautiful. Locate on a protected site away from harsh winds.

  • Pruning:

Pine, spruce and fir trees should not be pruned as they are most beautiful when allowed to develop their natural form. It is also important to locate these trees on a site with adequate space so that pruning will not be required to keep them from crowding buildings, walkways, etc.
