    The species is rarely available but numerous cultivars offer a diversity of sizes, forms, and colors. The Filifera (threadleaf falsecypress) group of cultivars have proven best at the U.W.-Madison arboretum and are the only cultivars that should be considered in the upper Midwest.

    Heading back is done to shape and reduce the size of the plant. Cut prominent shoots back inside the body of the plant to where they meet another branch.

    Heading back may be done from late fall to mid-July.
